The discussions about Japanese toilets reminded me of pranks with these toilets! I like the second prank.

PE6 Reflection and New Goals

ココです。
Reflection: The PE activities have definitely helped me improve the specifics of pitch that I could not isolate and work on from self-study. I think that my pronunciation, pitch pattern, and intonations have become much more comfortable in most settings. The shadowing was a new concept to me. Although I still make some pitch errors, I think it is not a big problem for now. The office hours and language table are of immense utility to me, and I have rarely missed a week for those events and opportunities, as it gave me the ability to practice what I wanted to improve on the most: speaking.

Goals:
Continue to work on pitch patterns in sentences, especially commonly used sentences in modern Japan.
Develop "common" pitch vocabulary so that shadowing and conversations can become as natural as possible.
Activities:
Listen to more Japanese speakers
Go to office hours once a week
Go to Mathey language table every week and Forbes language table every other week.

Kaguya-hime no Monogatari: The tale of the bamboo cutter

ココです。
A movie by Studio Ghibli is set to be released in November 2013. It is called かぐや姫の物語, "The Story of Princess Kaguya". I am really excited about this not just because it is another Studio Ghibli movie this year (after Kaze Tachinu) but it is based off of arguably the most famous traditional Japanese story "The tale of the bamboo cutter" or "Kaguya hime".
Here's a teaser:

If it follows the plot of the original story I would want more; I hope that there are lots of added plot elements in the movie. Though the original story is a fairly long tale, there's a lot more a movie could do.
It's been a while since Isao Takahata directed a movie. It will be interesting to see how this goes:)

Goal Statement (10/08)

ココです。
So far I felt like I have isolated many of my weaknesses in a few pronunciation difficulties. Most notably is the quick progression from one voiceless syllable to the next, as well as quick progression between syllables with the same vowel. My rhythm sounds off at times as well. Word pitch tends to be exaggerated at times, bland at others.

Goals:
To improve my fluidity between voiceless syllables and multiple syllables with the same vowels.
To improve my pitch to become a consistently present part of my speech.

Activities:
Go to office hours at least once a week, if possible.
Try short periods of shadowing from any Japanese media I watch.
Go to the Japanese language table every week.

Just a picture I found pretty amusing:
おもしろいですね。
I'm trying to read it, and it just so happens that the one and only kanji used I can't read, but I am thinking it means cough.

Speaking Japanese is so fun. I definitely need to practice more.

As I enter Chapter 2...

みなさん、こんばんは
ココです。^^

As I enter the second week of Japanese class, I feel somewhat different from anything I have ever felt before. Though I have not learned anything new content wise, the drills and pronunciation exercises all were almost completely new to me. It felt as if a different part of my brain was unlocked at that instant. Even though it's not much yet, the fact that I am gaining this sort of inspiration is amazing. The speaking side generally really began to make me feel as if I were studying how to use a language, which is the most important part, rather than the theories or grammatical aspects of said language. I do hope that this feeling can persist for much longer.

A little bit more about me. I don't know what my major is yet...maybe 経済学?経済学はとてもおもしろい。So I am looking into the requisites for an economics major. I am also tentatively thinking about premed as well. I like playing many musical instruments, but most of all the piano (ピアノが大好き), which I have been playing for pretty much all my life. Out of interest in the Japanese language in my sophomore year of high school came interest in Japanese culture as well. I really enjoy the Japanese myths, music, movies and anime. I hope to go to Japan someday, but before that, becoming a better speaker is crucial!

少しねむいです。風邪をひきました:(

JPN 101 First Entry

For September 13
As a Korean-American I learned to speak both Korean and English from birth. At home I would speak in Korean and outside I would speak in English. When I began to study the evolution of languages I began to notice that Korean and English were pretty much on the opposite sides of the evolution tree. I came upon Japanese searching for a language that seemed similar to Korean.

The two languages' grammar are so close it's creepy at times. I know close to nothing about spoken Japanese but I have done some grammatical comparisons between the two languages and am put into awe every time I notice something similar. Though they sound significantly different the sentence structure is almost exactly the same. Having only primarily focused on the parts of Japanese that I could visibly compare to an aspect of Korean, I decided to study Japanese with traditional methods to actually learn how to speak and communicate. Definitely the most difficult part of the course so far is the listening/responding drills that are new experiences for me. I can tell that learning to speak naturally will become quite the challenge for me.

In this way I am excited to thoroughly learn the language of Japanese that so intrigued me in the past. I am also excited because I love Japanese culture. I hope the epiphanies can continue on, as I also begin to most importantly learn how to speak and gain more understanding of how the it all works out.

As for now, I'll do my best to learn.

がんばります
